LANDES, the ideal destination for your camping vacation
In the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of south-west France, the moors reveal their charm between the Atlantic coast, the Landes forest, a veritable green lung, and agricultural areas.
Covering an area of 9243 km2, the Landes offer a vast natural space that will appeal to any traveler in search of a nature vacation.
From the beaches of the Côte d’Argent and its world-famous surf spots such as Soorts-Hossegor, to the more intimate Contis, to the agricultural areas famous for poultry and foie gras, not forgetting the lush Landes forest, the Landes offers relaxation, sport and nature. And don’t forget the benefits of the thermal spa in Dax, with its fountain of hot water and its many virtues: fitness centers are an added bonus for this destination.
Bordering on the departments of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Gers, Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne and Dordogne, the Landes is ideally situated for discovering such must-sees as Biarritz and the Basque coast, the Médoc vineyards, Bordeaux and its architecture, and the Dune du Pyla.
Demographically, the Landes has a low population density: 422,976 inhabitants in 2021. It’s still a traditional, agricultural department as soon as you move away from its seaside resorts. Forestry (upkeep of the forests and marshlands of the time) gave rise to festivals and traditions that are still alive today: stilts, Landais games, the Landais race, mayade or maïade.
Mont-de-Marsan’s blue-and-white Ferias and Dax’s red-and-white Ferias are well-known for their lively atmosphere, with bandas playing in the streets. Let yourself be guided by this destination full of surprises.
What to see in LES LANDES during your Cottage Parks camping vacation
There’s something for everyone in the Landes! Water sports, equestrian sports, snowshoeing or the famous Landes race: the whole department is a real playground. And don’t forget rugby! The sporting atmosphere is everywhere. But did you know that there’s a chapel called Notre Dame du Rugby? A sanctuary for sports enthusiasts!
If the spacious beaches let you enjoy the peace and quiet, the back-coast lakes are also great for swimming.
Activities such as the Courant d’Huchet reserve, which the boatmen will take you on a calm and serene tour.
Dax, with its férias, thermal baths and fitness centers, also offers Roman remains: superb art deco architecture such as the atrium.
The Marquèze eco-museum, set in the heart of the Landes forest, is an invitation to step back in time, in the middle of an airial (typical Landes estate with manor house and farm buildings). A must to discover Landes culture, forestry and traditions.
All along the Landes coast, you can enjoy surfing in a relaxed, jovial atmosphere. Although Hossegor and Capbreton are very well known, other beaches have nothing to envy: Moliets et Maâ, Ondres, Contis, Mimizan, Biscarosse.
Less well known but just as beautiful, the hinterland hides little nuggets such as the archeological site of Brassempouy, the Bastides as in Armagnac, in Montfort…
And if you visit some of the more remote villages, you’ll have the pleasure of discovering churches made of aliose (waterproof rock in the subsoil of the moors), as in Pontenx les Forges, or pebbles, as in Sorde l’Abbaye, and magnificent arenas, such as those in Pomarez.
And to come to the Landes without tasting all the culinary specialities is sacrilege! Savory or sweet, there’s something for everyone. Have you tried pastis? No, that’s not for drinking, but for eating. What about croustade, the comforting garbure, duck confit or foie gras? But did you know that there are also kiwis, white asparagus and peanuts on the moors? To savour! The department’s farms welcome you for the great pleasure of your taste buds.

Who remembers the famous Maïté, a worthy ambassador for her native region, with her high-calorie, convivial recipes? Welcome to the Landes.
If you want to combine nature, sport and good food, the Landes is the perfect destination.
With its high-quality poultry first and foremost: geese, ducks and Landes chickens.
There are many farms along the country roads where you can buy their local produce.
Recycling info: feathers from geese and ducks are reused in the production of Pyrenex: down jackets, bedding, textiles… quality made in France for your winter clothing.
Landaise salad remains a must-try in restaurants or at home. On the whole, give preference to local producers. Discover garbure, potée au chou, apple croustade and pastis landais on the pastry side, as well as kiwis from Peyrehorade, asparagus from the sands, corn and peanuts from Hagetmau.
The only port in the Landes, Capbreton, offers a bit of Atlantic fishing, and the nearby Arcachon basin is a great place to sample the local oysters.
As for drinks, take the time to sample the local Armagnac, Floc de Gascogne and vins des sables.
A visit to the Michelin-starred Relais de la Poste restaurant in Magescq is an unforgettable experience.
While the reputation of the Férias is well established, there are many other local traditions and festivals that enliven the region throughout the year.
- Festival Musicalarue in Luxey
- Férias to discover: Mont-de-Marsan and the Madeleine festivals, those of Dax are the best known, but if you’re looking for a more local atmosphere, those of Pontonx, Soustons or Saint-Vincent-de-Tyrosse are just as lively.
- Mayades: on the evening of April 30 to May1, traditionally a mayade is planted in the garden of the person celebrating an important event: birthday, baby, retirement, etc. The mayade is a pine tree decorated with paper flowers and ivy. It’s a convivial celebration that requires preparation and hours of work to make the flowers.
- Festival Toros y Salsa in Dax, early September. This event, which takes place in the Dax bullring, combines bullfighting and the festive atmosphere of salsa.
- Printemps des Landes: the Landes tourist offices are offering free nature-themed events throughout the Easter period. Something to delight young and old alike.
- Landes cows all summer long.
- Village fairs combining traditional games and stilts.
